How do I use the Item finder?

Walk around on the maps and at time an item will show up such as a sapphire or a ruby.

amathyst said is right but he missed a point i guess , we need to equip it first . to equip go to manage items -> equip item. ruby and saphire are gems used for getting arainbow pokeball and nuggets to get a shadow one. check lab.
