How does it work and what is the point. It takes forever to catch the pokemon he wants and the credits are always low ?

The point is to get rainbow/shadow mudkip. Rainbow/shadow are rated around 2k because that is how much you buy it with coins. it is a challenge to get them. that is why takes a long time to get it. You can't catch it btw without the rainbow pokeball i think.

what is the best way for me to aproach laboratory.

i would say to go to the trade/market sections offering about 5 coins or something for the pokemon you need.

First of all, to make it a lot easier, do Random Quests.
One for Coins/Cash or one for Lab Credits/Points

With Lab Credits, you are able to buy a Rainbow ball or a Shadow ball
Both cost 2999 coins or 495 lab credits.

And yes, it is hard to find the certain pokemon. But it takes time.
If you think you want to skip the task, you need 1000 points. - You can get/earn points
in the Battle Tent.
