I feel like some sort of old dude without any technical capabilities whatsoever for asking this, but what is CAPTCHA and how does it affect me depending on which setting it's on?

its the verification code that randomly pops up that requires you to type in the message it provides. the reason for this is to detect if botting/macroing or any other 3rd party programs are used to benefit from the game. For i love this because if everytime u type in the right code you get coins/money :)
