It's like when you find wild pokemons, you'll find items, which mean that you can use itemfinder on the maps ( forest, time forest, dark cave..etc)
also the item finder affected by weather, unlike dowsing machine. you can check the weather by clicking on the city name in the top-left column then click weather forecast. hope that help (and right) :)
