I clicked on redeem coins and it said, You have redeemed 10 credits and 4 coins, or something along the lines. What exactly do credits do??

I'm guessing you mean clan credits? Your earn them by training and can use then to get money, coins, a random swap pokemon or a pokemon of your choice.

They can be redeemed for coins as you just said or they can be used for buying promos (ie some promos will cost both coins and credits) but that's pretty much all of the uses as of right now.
