I was just looking around at the 'Laboratory' and saw that you can some kind of research using 'Rubies & Sapphires' or 'Nuggets' and I was just wondering if someone could please tell me how to get those items. Are they even obtainable??

First off you need to buy an ITEM FINDER from the dept store ( Itemfinder $25,000,000 & 2,500 coins) this is the cheapest one or you could get a DOWSING MACHINE ($100,000,000 & 15,000 coins) then goto manage item and click equip items at the top and equip it.
Then you go on to the maps and search and at some point you will find the said items,when you have the amount you need goto the lab and use them.

10 nuggets = 50% chance of getting the item Balck sludge
50 ruby\sapphires = 50% chance of getting the item Leftovers
